"City Hall Park" looks through the lamps and stonework of the park toward the courthouse and the Manhattan Municipal Building beyond the trees. The composition is built in layers: dark iron and stone in the foreground, dense summer green through the middle, the pale civic towers rising into the evening sky. Warm light inside the lamps is answered by the last sunlight catching the architecture in the distance. Everything between them has already gone cool. The lamps and the fountain finial belong to the Jacob Wrey Mould fountain, installed in front of City Hall in 1871, exiled to the Bronx in 1920, and returned in 1999.
