This watercolor focuses on a carved figure embedded in the ornate capital of the Manhattan Municipal Building in Lower Manhattan. Seen from below, the face rises unexpectedly from layers of acanthus leaves, scrolls, and architectural ornament. The painting is built almost entirely from cool gray and violet, using value rather than color to separate the overlapping forms. The composition is close and vertical, and the architecture compresses behind it. Designed by William M. Kendall of McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1914, the Manhattan Municipal Building was created to house New York City's rapidly expanding government after the consolidation of the five boroughs.
